Office of Greek Life


We advocate for and develop students and organizations holistically through collaboration with community partners to provide educational programs, services and resources relating to leadership development, civic engagement, values congruence, community service, philanthropic endeavors, and risk management.

Expectations of Students Involved in Fraternities and Sororities

  • Complete the Student Activities Center online recognition process to be formally recognized by the University.
  • Ensure all chapter decisions and activities comply with all federal, state and local laws as well as the procedures of respective inter/national organization, Greek governing council policies and constitutions.
  • Foster an environment that promotes academic achievement, leadership development, personal growth, responsible decision-making, and the support of human worth and dignity.
  • Maintain open, honest and frequent communication among chapters, councils, headquarters, local volunteers, and The Florida State University faculty, staff, and alumni.
  • Contact the Office of Greek Life immediately in times of crisis including: fire, accident, loss of life and other emergency situations.
  • Govern themselves through chapter meetings, council meetings, respective judicial boards (as found in the Florida Administrative Code and FSU Student Conduct Code), etc.
  • Attend and actively participate in retreats, training sessions, meetings and activities sponsored by the chapters, governing councils and the Office of Greek Life including: cross council programming; leadership development; philanthropic events; community service; and other major events.
  • Support recruitment, philanthropic efforts, community service events, marketing and public relations efforts through programs including orientation, admissions events, Preview and additional university activities.
  • Maintain chapter facilities and complete annual fire inspections.
  • Accept responsibility for all financial obligations to the university or community incurred as a fraternity or sorority.
  • Maintain and enhance the existing peer judicial processes with the councils and individual chapters.
  • Familiarize chapter members and comply with the American Disabilities Act and The Florida State University non-discrimination policy, and make reasonable accommodations.

Benefits for Students Involved in Fraternities and Sororities

  • Entitled to single-sex membership promulgated under Title IX of the U.S. Education Act of 1972.
  • Selectively choose members according to Inter/national organization and council recruitment or intake guidelines.
  • Participate as a recognized fraternity or sorority in campus activities and events.
  • Access to Office of Greek Life advisors and resources.
  • Greek Councils’ Office is available within the Dean of Students Department, specifically room A 4301 University Center.
  • Recognized fraternities and sororities may use the university’s name as part of their organization’s name as long as the university’s name only appears at the end of the organizations name and must be followed by the statement “a Recognized Student Organization” (i.e. Student Organization at Florida State University, a Recognized Student Organization). The title should follow one of these forms: (1) Florida State University; (2) FSU (as stated in Florida Regulation 6C2-3.0015 (http://www.fsu.edu/rd2005/gencounsel/notices/full/6c2-3.0015.html)

Expectations of Greek Life Staff

  • Support the mission and goals of The Florida State University and the values-based educational programs of inter/national organizations.
  • Educate students and organizations on established University policies that describe expectations for student behavior and activities. 
  • Communicate with chapter leaders, alumni advisors, and inter/national headquarters about organizational management, goals, challenges, programming, etc.
  • Coordinate programs and procedures to support personal health, safety, and academic success at The Florida State University. This includes: leadership learning, civic engagement, values congruence, fire inspections, risk management, event management, campus reservations, and contracting, hazing, alcohol and other drug education, Greek judicial processes, recruitment, new member education, community service, etc.
  • Assist and support Greek governing councils and community with planning and facilitation of programming, educational development, scholarship, and leadership learning such as New Member Symposium, Greek Leadership Summit, Emerging Leaders Program, Extrav, Dance Marathon, Greek Week, etc.  
  • Affirm the positive role that fraternities and sororities play at Florida State University in providing positive social events, service and leadership development opportunities for its members.
  • Train and support councils with self-governance processes and peer accountability.
  • Assist chapters in dealing with crisis management. Offer chapters, councils, headquarters and local volunteers assistance in dealing with crisis situations.
  • Create and maintain an environment where students are comfortable receiving assistance from Greek Life staff, chapter advisors and inter/national headquarters.
  • Recognize and promote the Greek community through university publications, programs, educational forums, committees and events to various constituencies including faculty, staff and students; provide those same resources to Greek students about the University.
  • Respond to the needs of the Greek community by learning and remaining current about inter/national Greek organizations, issues, and trends.
  • Solicit input from the Greek community and invite student representatives to serve on university task forces, committees and forums, especially those affecting the Greek community.

Greek Life Structure


The Greek governance structure governs fraternity and sorority chapters by maintaining active governing councils (IFC, PH, NPHC, MGC, and GAC). Each council maintains a separate constitution that includes statement of purpose, membership guidelines, and general procedures.

The current council structures are as follows:

  • The Interfraternity Council (IFC) at The Florida State University is a council of men’s fraternities belonging to and in good standing with the North-American Interfraternity Conference (NIC), the Fraternity Executives Association (FEA), and other fraternities recognized by inter/national organizations.
  • The Panhellenic Association (PH) at The Florida State University is a council of women’s fraternities belonging to and in good standing with the National Panhellenic Conference (NPC).
  • The National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) at The Florida State University is a council of men’s and women’s fraternities and sororities belonging to and in good standing with the National Pan-Hellenic Council, Inc. (NPHC).
  • The Multicultural Greek Council (MGC) at The Florida State University is a multi-cultural and culturally-based and council of men’s and women’s fraternities and sororities.
  • The Greek Activities Council (GAC) at The Florida State University is a council comprised of members from the FSU Greek community, and serves as a programming council for events such as philanthropies, Greek Week and the annual Greek Awards recognition event.
